Buying from Shenzhen: a desk-side orientation

Shenzhen's sourcing areas each work a different way, from counter-by-counter component trading to appointment-only brand showrooms. This page sorts the city by what you buy, shows how a Shenzhen and Guangzhou trip runs, and states what our notes cannot support.

Sort the city by what you buy

Shenzhen is not one market. Each sourcing area serves a different category and runs on a different rhythm, so decide what you are buying before you pick an address. A day spent walking the wrong area costs a day, and the counters that stock one category rarely stock another.

Components, phone parts, repair parts, LED, security equipment and finished consumer electronics trade in Huaqiangbei, Futian District, a 1.45 km2 core area that the Futian District government counts as 35 specialist markets (February 2026). Gold, K-gold, diamonds, jadeite and pearls concentrate in separate halls in Shuibei, Luohu District, where the jewellery markets stand within walking distance of each other. Eyewear frames, lenses and OEM production sit in Henggang, Longgang District. Womenswear design brands sit on industrial park campuses in Dalang Fashion Town, Longhua District. Hardware, textiles, leather, printing and packaging raw materials sit in the Huanan (South China) Industrial Materials City park in Pinghu, Longgang District. Stationery, toys, gifts and crafts sit in Sungang, Luohu District.

Two of these areas are manufacturing clusters rather than trading floors, and the difference changes how you buy. Henggang eyewear and Dalang fashion are production bases with design studios and brand headquarters, so you book a visit in advance and meet people at their showroom. Huaqiangbei, Shuibei and Sungang are trading areas you walk into and work counter by counter.

What a counter actually is

Huaqiangbei, Shuibei and Sungang are walked at counter level. Trading happens at a one-metre counter, a metre-wide frontage where a trader sells components, accessories or finished goods and keeps the stock behind and above it. Ask for the price at the counter, then ask what changes if you take a different quantity, a different batch or a different version.

Much of the same trade also runs a front-shop-back-factory model: the counter is the sales front and the workshop or sourcing office behind it holds the stock and does the work. When a counter quotes a quantity you cannot use, ask whether the limit comes from the counter or from the workshop behind it, because those two answers lead to different order routes.

Working the area early in the day is the cheapest way to get counter time. Shenzhen News Network reported average daily footfall of 750,000 in the first half of 2025, including more than 7,000 foreign visitors a day (November 2025), so a weekday morning is the quietest window and the counter will talk longer.

What each page on this site is good for

Market pages tell you what an area sells, how it operates, where it sits, and which source every figure came from. Each market profile carries a source link, a source tier and a verification date, so you can open the number yourself before you rely on it.

Factory pages are different. A company record reflects what the supplier or a public registration says, and the page states whether the record was matched against a public source or only compiled from public listings. Category pages give the decision points for one product line, and guides such as this one cover the judgment calls that sit between the pages.

Running Shenzhen and Guangzhou in one trip

The common two-day pattern is Shenzhen first and Guangzhou second: a morning at Huaqiangbei while the counters are quiet, then the following morning in the Guangzhou apparel markets. The Guangzhou-Shenzhen high-speed and intercity rail links Futian and Shenzhen North with Guangzhou South in roughly half an hour, so the two cities can be run as one trip. Check the current timetable and buy the ticket on the day through China Railway's 12306 booking site, because service patterns change.

Do not plan to split one category across two cities on the same day. A rail journey plus a market day costs more time than it returns unless you already have a fixed appointment. If you need a specific brand showroom in Dalang or a specific factory in another district, book it before you fly and treat it as the fixed point the rest of the trip is built around.

Leave the last half-day unbooked. A component quote often needs a second visit to settle, and a free half-day at the end is what turns a first look into an order. If you are leaving through Hong Kong rather than flying out, the crossing arrangements are covered in the Hong Kong and Shenzhen guide.

What to bring and what to write down

Bring a bill of materials, not a shopping list. Write each line with the part number or exact specification, the package type, the quantity and the date code or version you will accept. A counter handed '100 pieces of that connector' will quote something, and a counter handed a line item with package type and date code will quote the thing you actually want.

Bring a reference sample or a clear photograph of the item, and keep the sample until the goods are in your hands. For clothing, bring one garment with the fit you want and note which measurements came from it. For components, bring the part you currently use and read the marking on the reel.

Decide before the first purchase who packs the goods and who collects them, because the same carton costs a different amount depending on who packs it. Bring a payment method the counter can accept and settle the payment terms before anything is handed over. Our payment terms guide covers the three shapes a supplier will offer and what each one shifts onto you.

What this orientation does not claim

We make no factory, price or lead-time claim on this page. The scale figures quoted here carry the source and the date shown in the sources list, and anything we have not verified is left out rather than estimated.

We have not surveyed door-to-door transit times, customs handling for every route, or current price levels, because those move faster than a static page can be trusted. If a claim matters to a purchase decision, follow the sourcing chain named on the market or factory page rather than relying on this orientation.

The category map, the trip sequencing and the preparation notes are our own working practice. The market scale figures quoted here come from the Futian District government, Xinhua Daily Telegraph and Shenzhen News Network as cited; those three links were reachable on the verification date shown. No factory, price or lead-time claim is made on this page.
